Lessons from Runaway Projects

School of Management Evening Seminar Series
Date: Thursday 28th June 2007
Timings: 6pm Registration, 6.30pm Presentation
Speaker:
Professor Terry Williams
Venue: School of Management, University of Southampton
Price: £15
Registration: Please download, complete and return the
registration form

High profile projects are sometimes dramatically unsuccessful. Costs can spiral out of control and deadlines slip. But we can learn how to do better through careful analysis of previous projects. Modelling can illustrate how ambiguity can wreck plans and positive feedback or 'vicious circles' cause projects to behave in a way that is sometimes counter-intuitive. Professor Williams will explain that three common factors are often present in problem projects. How these factors come together to cause huge over-runs will be examined in depth. The presentation will discuss the implications for project management and what this means for our practice as project managers.
Terry Williams is Professor of Management Science in the University of Southampton's School of Management. He has over 25 years of experience in Management Science (MS) and is prominent in both MS and project management.

Flying with the birds!

I'd like to organise a gliding evening at Lasham later this summer. The normal cost is £75 per flight however if we can get a group of at least 6 interested people this reduces to £40. If you'd to join in, please email me at: steve.pullen@virginmedia.co.uk by 8th June and I can start to book a suitable slot. If there are any dates that you will be unavailable please indicate in your email.
Each flight is actually a gliding lesson. It starts with a tow behind an aeroplane up to 2500ft. Your instructor will be in control so this is your chance to enjoy the view across to the Isle of Wight on a good day or look down on the picturesque Hampshire countryside. When the tow is released you will have the opportunity to try your hand at the controls, under your instructor's expert supervision of course. Each glider flight will typically last about 20 minutes.

Excel Tips & Hints

I recently needed to use Conditional Formatting in a slightly more complicated way than I have used previously. I discovered the following useful website of Excel Tips & Hints which helped me better understand the intricities of this under used Excel technique.

15 - Cornwall

If you're in Cornwall why not treat yourself to lunch in Jamie Oliver's 15 restaurant overlooking Watergate Bay? You can have a 3 course lunch for only £24.50.

Beautiful food requires top quality seasonal ingredients. Cornwall, blessed with more than its fair share of fabulous seafood and talented producers, is heaven for food lovers. The menus at Fifteen Cornwall will be making full use of this abundance, creating fresh, simple Italian-inspired dishes that allow the ingredients to speak for themselves. Add the incredible sea view and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere and you are promised an outstanding experience at Fifteen Cornwall…

Make sure that you book (online) before you go as the restaurant is extremely busy during the summer months.
